Directional drilling

Our commitment is to find creative solutions that reduce the cost of drilling your wells.

Directional drilling means steering the wellbore away from vertical along a planned path. When the target reservoir sits hundreds of metres from the surface location — or when conditions at the surface (open sea, a built-up area, protected land) rule out placing a rig directly above it — the well is guided to the target along a controlled trajectory.

The trajectory is built with a mud motor and bent sub, or with a rotary steerable system. Inclination and azimuth are transmitted to surface in real time by MWD telemetry, every survey station is compared against the planned path, and corrections are applied as soon as a deviation appears.

Planning covers anti-collision analysis against offset wells, permissible dogleg severity, loads on the drill string and the circulation regime. Those calculations are continuously re-checked against the surveys taken while drilling.

A directional driller and an MWD operator are assigned to the rig, with equipment and back-up kits supplied by EWD. Drilling parameters, survey stations and the actual trajectory are reported to the client for every shift.
