Once drilling ends, a well is not yet ready for production — a sequence of steps known as "completion" prepares it for safe, long-term operation. The first step is running production casing: this steel pipe supports the wellbore wall and separates the different pressure zones from one another.

Once casing is run, cementing follows — the annular space between the casing and the borehole wall is filled with cement. The purpose is not just to anchor the casing, but also to prevent fluid or gas migration between formations. The quality of the cement job determines how successful every later stage will be — a weak cement sheath can cause problems years down the line.
Next comes perforation: small channels are cut through the casing and cement into the productive formation so hydrocarbons can flow into the well. The depth, density and angle of the perforations are calculated to match the formation's properties — too little perforation restricts flow, too much can compromise structural integrity.
In the final stage, production equipment (tubing, safety valves, surface facilities) is installed and the well is brought online under controlled conditions.
